After being shot Lincoln was carried across the street and was laid out in this bed. The bed is only about six feet long and Lincoln had to be laid diagonally to fit in it. On the morning of April 15th 1865 Surgeon General Barnes stood by this bed. At 22 minutes after 7 A.M. Lincolns chest heaved upward, held the position and then relaxed. Dr Barnes waited for the next breath and when it did not come he pulled down the sheet and listened to the presidents chest. Then he placed two silver coins onto the president's eyes. The first to speak was Secretary Stanton, "Now, he belongs to the ages".
